What this category is for

Email reporting often focuses on opens and clicks because they are easy to see, but business value is closer to conversion, revenue, contribution and retention. This category starts with those outcomes.

Keep attribution assumptions explicit. A platform may credit email with revenue using a click or view window, while finance may report a different net-revenue number. Both can be useful when labeled correctly.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

List growth is not useful if list productivity collapses

An email list grows from 10,000 to 15,000 active subscribers. Revenue rises from $30,000 to $36,000. Total revenue improved, but revenue per subscriber fell from $3.00 to $2.40.

Old list10k
Old RPS$3.00
New list15k
New RPS$2.40

The program grew, but the average active subscriber became less productive.

Illustrative only. Replace every input with your own business data before making a decision.

WORKFLOW

Move beyond opens and clicks

Use engagement metrics diagnostically, then connect them to business outcomes.

01

Define active list

Separate deliverable active subscribers from historical contacts.

02

Measure conversion

Track meaningful downstream actions.

03

Measure revenue productivity

Calculate RPS and AOV.

04

Compare with program cost

Use ROI or contribution after costs.

QUALITY CHECK

Common mistakes

Changing attribution windows

RPS and ROI become hard to compare.

Using total contacts

Inactive and undeliverable records can distort list productivity.

Calling attributed revenue incremental

Attribution does not prove causality.
