USE YOUR RESULT

Is your actual ROAS above break-even?

A break-even result tells you the threshold your order economics require. It does not tell you what a campaign actually earned. First use the revenue and ad spend ROAS calculator for the same campaign and period, then compare that result with the threshold above. Keep the revenue definition consistent: a gross platform purchase value should not be compared directly with a threshold based on net sales after refunds.

Above break-even can still miss your profit goal

Consider an illustrative store with $100 net revenue and $40 contribution before ads per order. Its break-even ROAS is $100 ÷ $40 = 2.50x. At $1,000 ad spend and $3,000 net revenue, actual ROAS is 3.00x. Those 30 orders produce $1,200 contribution before ads, leaving $200 after advertising. That is a 6.67% post-ad contribution margin, before fixed overhead and taxes.

If the store wants 10% of net revenue left after ads, its target is 1 ÷ (0.40 − 0.10) = 3.33x, rounded. A 3.00x result clears break-even but misses that target. Use the target ROAS calculator with a desired profit margin to reserve an amount above the acquisition floor. A desired margin equal to or greater than the pre-ad contribution margin cannot be achieved with positive ad spend under this model.

Below break-even: identify the constraint

Before cutting spend across the account, check whether the gap comes from conversion rate, average order value or contribution per order. The guide to improving ROAS without just cutting ad spend walks through those decisions. Work on one measurable constraint, allow for conversion and return delays, and compare contribution after ads alongside the ROAS ratio. A higher ratio alone does not prove that total profit increased.

Translate the target into a traffic decision

With $40 contribution per order and a 2% click-to-sale conversion rate, break-even average CPC is $40 × 0.02 = $0.80. Reserving $10 per order lowers the target CPC to ($40 − $10) × 0.02 = $0.60. Test your own conversion-rate assumptions in the maximum CPC scenario comparison. This is an economic ceiling, not a promise that an ad platform can deliver those clicks.

Finally, use the blended marketing efficiency calculator to compare total business revenue with total marketing spend. Keep that business-wide check separate from attributed campaign ROAS; overlapping attribution and returning customers can make channel totals misleading.

HOW IT WORKS

Build your ROAS target from contribution margin

ROAS measures attributed revenue divided by ad spend, but revenue is not profit. Before an advertising dollar can create profit, each order must pay for product cost, fulfillment, payment fees, discounts and expected returns. The amount left before advertising is contribution margin.

CORE FORMULABreak-even ROAS = Tracked revenue per order ÷ Contribution per order

If an order produces $100 in tracked revenue and $40 in contribution before ads, break-even ROAS is 2.50x.

Why the simple margin shortcut can mislead

The common shortcut is 1 ÷ contribution margin percentage. It works only when the margin percentage and the ROAS numerator use the same revenue basis. Ad platforms may report gross purchase value while your accounting uses net revenue after discounts and refunds. This calculator keeps both concepts visible so you can document the difference.

Break-even is a floor, not a goal

At break-even, advertising has used all contribution profit. There is nothing left from the order to support fixed payroll, software, rent, growth investment or owner profit. Enter a desired post-ad profit margin to calculate a more useful target ROAS. Read the full target ROAS formula guide before changing bidding targets.

Use one consistent data period

Mixing this month’s revenue with last quarter’s return rate produces a fragile answer. Pull AOV, discounts, refund assumptions and variable costs from a comparable period. For products with delayed returns, use a mature cohort or a documented expected-return allowance. Our calculation methodology explains the assumptions and limits.

PRACTICAL WORKFLOW

From raw data to a usable media target

A defensible ROAS target is a short chain of documented decisions.

01

Normalize revenue

Start with average order value, subtract routine discounts, and decide how refunds and customer-paid shipping are treated.

02

Capture variable costs

Include COGS, outbound shipping, payment fees, pick-and-pack charges and variable support or return costs.

03

Set a profit buffer

Move above break-even by reserving a post-ad margin appropriate for fixed costs, risk and business goals.

04

Monitor actuals

Compare platform ROAS with blended revenue, realized refunds, contribution profit and conversion rate.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions about break-even ROAS

What is break-even ROAS?

It is the attributed revenue-to-ad-spend ratio at which contribution profit exactly pays for advertising. A result of 2.5x means the model needs $2.50 of tracked revenue for every $1 of ad spend to reach zero contribution profit after ads.

Should I use gross margin or contribution margin?

Use contribution margin for acquisition planning. Gross margin often omits variable fulfillment, payment, return and service costs that reduce the amount available for ads.

Is break-even ROAS a good campaign target?

Usually it is a floor. A business that needs profit after acquisition should use a higher target ROAS based on its desired post-ad margin and risk tolerance.

How often should I update the inputs?

Update them when pricing, product mix, shipping rates, discounts or return behavior changes materially. Review the assumptions on a consistent schedule and retain the source period.

Why does the calculator show maximum CPA?

Contribution per order is the most an advertiser can spend to acquire one order before that order falls below break-even. A safer operational CPA target is normally lower.

How is break-even CPC calculated?

Maximum CPA is multiplied by conversion rate. For example, a $40 maximum CPA and 2% conversion rate imply an $0.80 break-even CPC, assuming the rate and click definition are comparable.
